BlackJack is not just a simple game of chance. The nature of the game allows for a certain amount of strategy to be implemented by the player. Some of the most experienced players of BlackJack use strategy to maximize their potential winnings.
To learn basic strategy is not difficult - it is simply based on the true aim of the game. Many believe that the aim of BlackJack is to get as close to 21 as possible without going 'bust', and in order to do so, that the player should try to guess whether the next card will help them or bust their hand. This is wrong; the true aim of BlackJack is simply to beat the dealer's hand. It is worth remembering that the dealer has to hit if his hand is below 17, so the player can play his hand however he chooses!
All the player's decisions are based on the dealer's up-card. Here's the quick version of the basics:
- Hit your stiffs (12-16) when the dealer looks strong (7-A), but stand when the dealer looks weak ( 2-6).
- Always Stand on hard 17, or soft 18 or higher.
- Double Down on 11 if the dealer shows a 10 or smaller.
- Double Down on 10 if the dealer shows a 9 or smaller.
- Double Down on 9 if the dealer shows a 3, 4, 5 or 6.
- Double Down on all soft hands from A-3 to A-7 if the dealer shows a 4, 5 or 6.
- Always split Aces and 8s.
- Never split 4s, 5s or 10s.
- Split all other pairs if the dealer shows 4, 5 or 6.
- Never take insurance.
By bearing in mind that this strategy is not perfection but correct basic strategy, and whilst it does not guarantee a hefty pay-off, it should help you maximize your winnings.
